After being put in to bat, KKR were on the back foot right from the start, losing both openers inside the first two overs.

Trent Boult began the carnage by castling Sunil Narine for a duck in the first over, while Deepak Chahar then removed Quinton de Kock for one in the second over. The South African was caught by debutant Ashwani Kumar at mid-off.

Ashwani’s day got better when he took a wicket with his very first delivery in the IPL, sending KKR skipper Ajinkya Rahane back to the dugout for 11.

Rahane was caught at deep backward point by Tilak Varma who almost made a hash of the chance but managed to grab it on the second attempt.

Ashwani was in the thick of the action again, dropping a sitter to reprieve Venkatesh Iyer off Boult.

But the chance did not prove costly as Iyer fell in the following over by Chahar for three, attempting a ramp that went into keeper Ryan Rickelton’s gloves.

Skipper Hardik Pandya then brought himself on for the seventh over and deepened KKR’s woes by having Angkrish Raghuvanshi caught at deep midwicket by Naman Dhir for 26.

Rinku Singh and Manish Pandey then attempted to rebuild the innings. Both of them hit a six each off Vignesh Puthur who was removed from the firing line after his opening over went for 14.

After a 29-run stand, a double strike by Ashwani in the 11th over ended their repair job. He first had Rinku caught in the deep for 17 and then bowled Pandey for 19. In his next over, Ashwani bowled Andre Russell for five to leave KKR at 88/8.

All six bowlers used shared the spoils, with Vignesh and Mitchell Santner polishing off the last two wickets as KKR were bowled out for the lowest score of the current IPL season with 22 balls to spare.

KKR made one change to their side with Narine returning in place of Moeen Ali, while MI brought back Will Jacks and also handed a debut to Ashwani.

MI have lost their opening two matches to Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Titans.

KKR, on the other hand, recovered from an opening loss to Royal Challengers Bangalore by posting a comfortable win over Rajasthan Royals.
